Project Description

The Project includes land acquisition and site preparation of multiple parcels, which will enable MBTA to preserve, restore, and expand the railroad use of the site, as well as enhance rail operations. The long-term use of the Widett Circle site is as a layover facility for MBTA’s Commuter Rail System to meet near-term and future system operational needs.

MBTA’s South Side midday layover facilities are operating at or near capacity. The acquisition is critical for the efficient maintenance, operation, and expansion of the South Side Commuter Rail. The development of the new yard on the site will facilitate the conversion of the Commuter Rail service to an all-day bidirectional clock-face Regional Rail, resulting in improved service and operational efficiencies for transportation crews and maintenance.
