Interactive Map for TIFIA and RRIF TOD Eligibility
Transit-oriented Development (TOD) projects within ½ mile walking distance of certain transit and railroad stations may be eligible for TIFIA and RRIF loans*. Stations with commuter and intercity passenger rail services qualify proximate TOD projects for both RRIF and TIFIA financing. Stations served by intercity buses and all forms of fixed guideway transit qualify proximate TOD projects for TIFIA financing.
This mapping tool developed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics is intended to help sponsors of TOD projects explore nearby stations and better understand whether they include services that may qualify their projects for TIFIA or RRIF loans. It is not an official determination of eligibility. Please note that due to inherent limitations in how this data is gathered, the underlying service and station data in this mapping are not 100% accurate, nor is the method used to measure proximity consistent with the method used in official eligibility analyses.
As examples:
1) This version of the tool does not include bus rapid transit or intercity bus stations, both of which can qualify proximate TOD projects for TIFIA financing; and
2) The ½ mile radii are drawn on this map as straight-line buffers, while the Bureau's official analyses measure the most direct, accessible pedestrian path between the project and the nearest qualified station. As a result, the tool does not include all qualifying stations for TOD projects and is overly inclusive of the area around the qualifying stations depicted.
Consult the Build America Bureau's TOD Project Eligibility FAQs for more detailed guidance on the definitions of qualifying services and stations and official analyses conducted to determine a TOD project's eligibility for RRIF and TIFIA loans. Please get in touch at BureauTOD@dot.gov should you have any questions or to further explore your specific project's eligibility.
