Employment Trends and Demographics

The Equal Employment Opportunity Programs Division of the Departmental Office of Civil Rights, carefully examines DOT-wide employment demographics, broken down by ethnicity, race/national origin, and gender, in order to discover and address any potential barriers to employment or career advancement.  The office also collects and studies data on employees with targeted disabilities for the same purpose.  For employment data specific to an Operating Administration, please contact that Operating Administrations' Office of Civil Rights.

In order to identify and address areas in which the DOT workforce does not accurately reflect the American workforce as a whole, the Equal Employment Opportunity Programs Division compares DOT on-board participation rates by ethnicity, race/national origin and gender to the Civilian Labor Force (CLF), a measure of national work force data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Because there is no CLF data for people with targeted disabilities (PWTDs), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) requires agencies to compare their on-board ratio of employees with targeted disabilities to that of the Federal agency with the highest ratio of PWTDs for the prior year (among agencies with at least 500 employees). The Equal Employment Opportunity Programs Division is proud to assist the Department of Transportation in building and retaining a highly-skilled workforce that closely resembles the American workforce as a whole.
