On Dec. 13, 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced $813 million in grant awards for 385 communities through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program. This was the second of two funding announcements for the fiscal year (FY) 2023 funding round and includes 337 Planning and Demonstration Grants.

Combined with a first round of FY 2023 funding in October that awarded $82 million to 235 Planning and Demonstration Grants, a total of 572 Planning and Demonstration Grants received $290 million in Federal funds in FY 2023

Listed in this document by state, these Planning and Demonstration Grants will help with everything from developing safety action plans, to informing improvements along corridors with safety issues, to using “quick-build” strategies to test out safety features such as separated bicycle lanes or curb extensions at intersections.

Helping communities plan and design safer streets is a key element of USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy to combat the crisis of deaths on our nation’s roads as part of the Department’s vision of zero roadway deaths through a Safe System Approach
