SMART Awarded Projects

Across Fiscal Years 2022, 2023, and 2024, the SMART Grants program awarded 127 Stage 1 Planning and Prototyping Grants. These grants span 45 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and totaled $200M. To date, SMART has announced $289,088,416 of the $296,000,000 allotted for fiscal years 2022-2024.

The first round of Stage 2 Implementation Grants have been awarded, to eight recipients with projects across ten states. These awards totaled $85M. Additional rounds of Stage 2 Implementation Grants will be announced in 2025 and 2026, and recipients of Stage 1 SMART Grants will be eligible to apply for Stage 2.

All SMART projects are multi-disciplinary and leverage multiple of the technology areas defined in BIL areas to address specific challenges. The 127 Stage 1 awards cover nine cross-cutting project areas:
