SMART Stage 1 FY2023

On March 14, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced $54 million in grant awards for the 34 projects across 22 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. For more details on the 34 projects, see below and the FY23 SMART Project List.

FY24 SMART grants include 34 projects totaling $54M across 22 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia

USDOT received a total of 321 application submissions to the FY23 SMART Grants Program. The average amount of funding requested was $1,495,300.

Technology Area Overview

The eight technology domains below were identified in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). All SMART projects leverage one or more of these technologies.

Themes Represented in Projects

The 34 projects selected for FY23 Stage 1 SMART grants build on the nine project types from last year. Each project type leverages multiple technologies defined in IIJA, as illustrated in the table below.
