FY23 SMART Stage 1 Awards

On March 14, 2024, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $54 million in grant awards for the 34 projects across 22 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. For more details on the 34 projects, see below and the FY23 SMART Project List.

FY24 SMART grants include 34 projects totaling $54M across 22 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia

 

Technology Area Overview

The eight technology domains below were identified in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). All SMART projects leverage one or more of these technologies. For a detailed definition of each technology area from BIL, please refer to the SMART Fact Sheet.

FY23 SMART Project Types

The 34 projects selected for FY23 Stage 1 SMART grants build on the nine project types from last year. Each project type leverages multiple technologies defined in BIL, as illustrated in the table below.

Number of SMART projects in each technical cluster: smart traffic signals - 3; connected and automated vehicles - 7; curb management - 1; uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) - 3; sensors - 10; transit innovation - 8; workzone safety - 1
