University Transportation Center (UTC) Program 2022-2026 Grants
General Grant Program Information
The University Transportation Center (UTC) program provides funding to nonprofit institutions of higher education to establish and operate Tier 1, regional, or national University Transportation Centers (UTCs or Centers) in order to: advance transportation expertise and technology in the varied disciplines that comprise the field of transportation through education, research, and technology transfer activities, provide for a critical multimodal transportation knowledge base outside of the US DOT, and address critical workforce needs and educate the next generation of transportation leaders with respect to the statutory research priorities.
Eligibility Information
Eligible applicants include U.S. nonprofit institutions of higher education (including two-year institutions that meet requirements) as defined under 20 U.S.C. 1001(a).
Eligibility for the Region 8 UTC Competition Re-open is limited to institutions of higher education located in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, or Wyoming.
UTCs must address one of the following seven research priorities:
- Mobility of people and goods
- Reducing congestion
- Promoting safety
- Improving the durability/extending the life of transportation infrastructure
- Preserving the environment
- Preserving the existing transportation system
- Reducing transportation cybersecurity risks
However, applicants are encouraged to propose new breakthrough ideas, innovations, and transformative research topics that will make significant contributions toward transforming the transportation system into a seamless, connected, and adaptable system of systems that serves the American people and economy through the safe, efficient, sustainable, and equitable movement of people and goods.
Funding Information
The UTC Program can provide $80-$100 million per year between 2022-2026 to 35 UTCs (20 Tier 1 UTCs, 10 regional UTCs, and 5 national UTCs). National and regional UTCs must match funds in an amount equal to the grant award amount, but Tier 1 UTCs may provide 50 percent of the award amount (all three must be in non-federal funds).
