General Grant Program Information

The Tribal College Initiative Grants program provides funding to 1994(s) Land Grant Institutions (Native American tribally controlled community colleges and universities that were granted land-grant status in 1994, as well as postsecondary vocational institutions, Bureau of Indian Affairs [BIA] postsecondary institutions, and the Institute of American Indian and Alaska Native Culture and Arts) to make capital improvements to their educational facilities and to purchase equipment.

Eligibility Information

Eligible applicants include the 35 NIFA 1994 Tribal Colleges.

Funds can be used by Tribal Colleges for infrastructure improvements, to purchase equipment and to develop “essential community facilities,” which are defined as a non-commercial facility that provides an essential service for orderly community development in a primarily rural area. Eligible community facilities projects include vehicles and major equipment, as well as schools, education equipment, libraries, dorms, renovation/improvements, and educational/cultural projects.

Funding Information

Grants are offered on a graduated scale based on an applicant’s state. The following program details are provided for South Dakota: The possible award amount is up to $250,000 per land grant institution. Funds can be used to pay up to 95% of the project cost. A 5% match is required. Partnerships with other federal, state, local, private, and non-profit entities are encouraged.
