Eligible applicants include the operating companies of shipyard facilities, which:
- Must be in a single geographic location;
- May not have more than 1,200 production employees;
- Must construct, repair, or reconfigure vessels 40 feet in length or greater for commercial or government use; or
- Must construct, repair, or reconfigure vessels 100 feet in length or greater for non-commercial vessels.
Eligible Uses

- Capital improvement projects in small shipyards that will be effective in fostering efficiency, competitive operations, and quality ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration; and
- Maritime training programs that will be effective in fostering employee skills and enhanced productivity related to shipbuilding, ship repair, and associated industries.
For capital improvement projects, all items proposed for funding must be new and must be owned by the successful grant applicant.
Funding Information
Under the Small Shipyard Grant Program, there is currently $8,750,000 available for grants for capital and related improvements to qualified shipyard facilities that will be effective in fostering efficiency, competitive operations, and quality ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration.
Potential applicants are advised that it is expected, based on experience, that the number of applications will far exceed the funds available and that only a small percentage of applicants will be funded.
The federal cost-share is 75 percent; applicants must provide the remaining 25 percent of total project costs using non-federal funds. Third-party in-kind funds are not allowed to satisfy the matching requirement.
