National Maritime Heritage Grant Program - Preservation Grants
General Grant Program Information
The National Maritime Heritage Preservation Grant program provides funds for prime awardees (grantees) to administer and run competitive subgrant programs and to complete "in-house" projects involving historic marine resources. For similar grants focused on the educational aspects of maritime heritage, please see the National Maritime Heritage Education Grant program.
Eligibility Information
Eligible activities must advance maritime heritage through public education for a wide audience on America's maritime heritage, including:
- Identification of historic marine resources (including archeological sites)
- Acquisition of historic marine resources for the purposes of preservation
- Repair, rehabilitation, stabilization, maintenance, limited reconstruction, or other capital improvements to historic maritime resources
- Other costs or activities associated with research, recordation, and planning (e.g., the production of measured drawings, photography, feasibility studies, or architectural and engineering services)
Eligible applicants for prime awards include State Historic Preservation Offices (state governments) and other organizations as described in the program's authorizing legislation; eligible sub-recipients include state governments, Tribal governments, local governments, and nonprofit organizations.
Funding Information
The National Maritime Heritage Education Grant program will provide $2 million annually for five awards, ranging from $50,000 to $750,000. Applicants must match the amount of the direct grant or subgrant, on a one-to-one basis, with non-federal assets from non-federal sources, which may include cash or donated services.
