Indian Highway Safety Occupant Protection Grant
General Grant Program Information
The Indian Highway Safety Occupant Protection Grant program (or Child Passenger Safety Seat Program, “CPS”) funds activities intended to decrease injuries and deaths attributed to the lack of safety belt and child restraint usage. These funds are intended to supplement an existing traffic safety program on Tribal lands.
Eligibility Information
Eligible Applicants
Eligible applicants are limited to federally recognized Tribes, Tribal governments, and their Tribal organizations.
Eligible Activities
Eligible activities include:
- Surveys to determine usage rates and to identify high-risk non-users
- Comprehensive programs to promote the correct usage of child safety seats and other occupant restraints
- Enforcement of safety belt ordinances or laws
- Specialized training (e.g., Operation Kids, traffic occupant protection strategies (TOPS), Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician Training)
- Evaluations
Funding Information
The Indian Highway Safety Occupant Protection Grant program provides funds through reimbursements. Funding amounts vary. Tribes must first expend their funds and submit documentation for reconciliation and reimbursement each month.
