Indian Highway Safety Law Enforcement Grants
General Grant Program Information
The Indian Highway Safety Law Enforcement Protection Grant program funds programs intended to reduce injuries and death attributed to impaired driving on Tribal lands. These funds are intended to supplement an existing traffic safety program on Tribal lands.
Eligibility Information
Eligible Applicants
Eligible applicants are limited to federally recognized Tribes, Tribal governments, and their Tribal organizations.
Eligible Activities
Eligible activities include:
- Employment expenses for law enforcement personnel (including straight time and overtime)
- Selective traffic enforcement programs (STEP) to apprehend impaired drivers
- Behavior-based traffic enforcement, such as speeding and seat belt enforcement
- Crash data systems, accident reconstruction training or equipment, vehicles, and associated equipment
- Specialized law enforcement training (such as standardized field sobriety testing)
- Public information programs on alcohol/other drug use and driving
- Education programs for convicted DWI/DUI offenders
- Youth alcohol education programs promoting traffic safety
- DUI/Impaired driving courts
- Full-time administrative support
- Programs or projects directed toward judicial training
Proposals for projects that enhance the development and implementation of innovative programs to combat impaired driving are also solicited.
Funding Information
The Indian Highway Safety Law Enforcement Protection Grant program provides funds through reimbursements. Funding amounts vary. Tribes must first expend their funds and submit documentation for reconciliation and reimbursement each month.
