Hazardous Materials Instructor Training Grants (HMIT)
General Grant Program Information
The Hazardous Materials Instructor Training (HMIT) program provides both training (“train-the-trainer”) and funds to external organizations for the purposes of training HAZMAT employers and employees on the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), especially in underserved communities.
Eligibility Information
Eligible applicants are limited to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations; 501(c)(4) and for-profit organizations are not eligible to apply.
Applicant organizations must demonstrate expertise in conducting training programs for and conducting outreach with hazmat employees to reduce risk and the likelihood of hazmat incidents and accidents. In addition, applicant organizations must justify their capability to perform properly planned and maintained training programs, ensuring that hazmat employees receive initial and continuing training on the risks involved in transporting hazardous materials, that the relevant training requirements in the Hazardous Materials Regulation (HMR) are met, and that the hazmat employees will be equipped to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
Refer to the NOFO for current definitions of eligible hazmat “employees” and “employers.”
Funding Information
HMIT made approximately $5 million in competitive grants for FY 2022. Individual awards range from $250,000 to $1 million. There is no requirement for matching; the federal cost-share is 100 percent.
