Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training Program (CMVOST)

General Grant Program Information

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant program provides financial assistance to organizations that provide CMV operator training to future CDL holders in the safe use of commercial motor vehicles. The program priority is providing training to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including National Guard members and Reservists, as well as certain military family members.

Eligibility Information

CMVOST awards are available to the following entities:

  1. State Government 
  2. County Government 
  3. City or Township Government
  4. Independent School District
  5. Public/State Controlled Institution of Higher Education
  6. Indian/Native American Tribal Government (Federally Recognized)
  7. Nonprofit with tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (other than small business)
  8. Small business
  9. Hispanic Serving Institution
  10. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
  11. Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCUUs)
  12. Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions

All applicants must meet one of the two criteria listed below: 

  1. Educational institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered for funding. 
  2. Non-accredited institutions that are approved by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) as eligible training providers and who accept WIOA grants; or approved by the State Approving Agencies (SAAs) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to accept VA benefits, will also be considered for funding.

Additionally, all applicants must meet the requirements for ELDT and be listed on the Training Provider Registry. Additionally, applicants must submit documentation to support that the entity meets the eligibility requirements.

Funding Information

$3,500,000 expected total amount to award. FMCSA will not require a matching share for fiscal year 2026 awards.
