Description

The National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) update project is a logical follow-on to the frequent and necessary updates (including functional and security). Activities are focused on testing NTCIP standards and protocols using the NTCIP Compliance Tester software, such as usability, selection of optional requirements, and the formation of an advisory group for future updates and direction. This work will also consider of new features for the distribution of the Test Procedures and the NTCIP Compliance Tester. Focus will be on NTCIP 1202 v03B for which test procedures are written—and will provide OEMs insight into latencies of SPaT and whether conflict monitor units can message on timing properly (in alignment with RSU and traffic controllers) to assure alignment. In addition, NTCIP 1202 v04 is in development and will be informed by this work. Additional protocol development and testing to ensure accuracy of the data contents in the SPaT messages with what is actually happening at the intersection (ground truth), and performance requirements (e.g., latency) will include (based on availability of resources and timing): NTCIP 1211 for signal priority and preemption; NTCIP 1209 for definitions for sensor systems (ensure valid data of sensor data into traffic controllers; and updates to NTCIP 1218 v01A for the roadside unit (RSU).

This NTCIP Project supports connected transportation interoperability (CTI) and will inform further CTI 4501 requirements evolution as well as incorporation of CTI into the software tool.
