The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Multimodal Freight Infrastructure and Policy is responsible for carrying out the national multimodal freight policy. The Assistant Secretary exercises executive direction over three subordinate offices:

Office of Multimodal Freight Infrastructure Investment: The Office of Infrastructure Investment identifies a coherent and actionable system-wide vision for freight infrastructure that ties modal systems together through collaborative planning. 

Office of Multimodal Freight Operations: The Office of Multimodal Freight Operations provides users of the nation’s freight transportation facilities and services a shared data infrastructure to optimize the movement of goods and equipment for a more efficient and competitive freight market.

Office of Multimodal Freight Research: The Office of Multimodal Freight Research researches and analyzes the freight transportation system markets to help inform transportation policy.
