Gopal Rajanala is the Chief Product and Technology Officer for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
With more than 25 years’ experience leading digital transformation, Gopal directs both agencies’ product strategy and technical investment. In this capacity, he oversees mission-critical digital portfolios, ensuring that modern IT solutions directly support the Department’s safety and infrastructure missions. His work focuses on advancing safety innovation, modernizing legacy systems into agile, user-centric platforms, and aligning technical architectures with business processes to improve operational efficiency.
A central architect of IT modernization efforts, Gopal is known for connecting strategic objectives to practical outcomes, aligning teams, processes, and systems to deliver sustainable, customer-focused solutions. Over his career, he has led a wide range of initiatives advancing enterprise transformation, the adoption of emerging technologies, and large-scale system implementation. He has been instrumental in leveraging AI and machine learning to address real-world challenges, most notably in support of the Department’s “Zero Deaths” safety mission. Moreover, by strengthening the data systems that monitor vehicle safety and rail integrity, his efforts contribute to reducing transportation-related fatalities, while positioning DOT for the future of autonomous and connected travel.
Gopal holds a Master of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India.
