SMART Stage 1 FY2024

On December 16, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced $54 million in grant awards for the 34 projects across 21 states. For more details on the 34 projects, see below and the FY24 SMART Project List. On May 6, 2025, Secretary Duffy announced the final approval of 21 Stage 1 grants, and subsequently eight more, and five projects are still under Departmental review.

USDOT received a total of 308 application submissions to the FY24 SMART Grants Program. The average amount of funding requested was $1,548,804.

Technology Area Overview

The eight technology domains below were identified in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). All SMART projects leverage one or more of these technologies.

Themes Represented in Projects

Like all SMART projects, the 34 projects selected for FY24 Stage 1 grants will deploy a combination of different technology areas to address specific challenges. Like previous years, the program groups them by project type, which each leverage multiple technologies defined in IIJA, as illustrated in the table below.
