Daniel E. Katz
Dan Katz was appointed Chief of Staff of the Department by Secretary Anthony Foxx. Dan previously served in the Department as Deputy Chief of Staff and prior to that, Counselor to the Secretary.
Before joining DOT, Katz worked in the United States Senate for 15 years. He spent seven of those years serving as Chief of Staff to the late United States Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), who chaired the Surface Transportation Subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee. Prior to that, Katz was the Senator’s Legislative Director and then Chief Counsel. Additionally, he served on the staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee and as a counsel to the Senate Budget Committee.
In the Senate, Katz worked on the passage of landmark transportation laws, including the establishment of a national standard for drunk driving at .08 blood alcohol content and the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008.
Katz earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida
