Acting Deputy Director, HASS COE (Former)
Robert "Bob" Sheehan was the Acting Deputy Director at the USDOT Highly Automated Systems Safety Center of Excellence (HASS COE). Bob was on detail at HASS COE from the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office, where he is the Program Manager for Architecture, Standards, and Cybersecurity. In this role, Bob leads research and implementation to support secure, cyber-resilient, and interoperable ITS implementations. This includes advancing interoperability through a standards-based approach to integration, and maintaining and evolving the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT)—the framework for researching, planning, defining, and deploying integrated and interoperable ITS. Prior to his current role with the ITS JPO, Bob led the development of the Artificial Intelligence for ITS program and jointly developed the multimodal and accessibility-focused programs with the ITS JPO, FTA and FHWA - Mobility on Demand Program, and Accessible Transportation Technologies Research Initiative. Before joining the ITS JPO in 2013, Bob was with the Federal Highway Administration leading the USDOT’s Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) Initiative, and before that spent eight years at the Virginia Department of Transportation as an Operations Engineer for the Northern Virginia Smart Traffic Signal System and Smart Traffic Center. Bob received his Professional Engineer license in 2004 and his Professional Traffic Operations Engineer certification in 2008. He received an M.S.C.E. in Transportation Systems from Virginia Tech and a B.S.C.E. in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University.
