Tips for Navigating USAJOBS

Applications to any DOT position all need to be submitted through USAJOBS. If you are new to USAJOBS, or if it's been a while, here are some tips for using the USAJOBS site effectively.

1. Create a USAJOBS Profile

You will need to create an account with USAJOBS, complete with a username and password. From there you can upload your resume, work experience, cover letters, and contact information to be saved to your own unique profile. You can also save in-progress applications to finish at a later date.

2. Search for a DOT Job

Search for jobs specifically at DOT (https://dot.usajobs.gov/) . You can add keywords to your search to find positions in a specific field. For example: add the keyword 'Engineer' if you are looking for engineering positions.

3. Review the Job Announcement

Before applying, make sure you understand the job description and relevant details about the position. Check with the OPM website for information about qualification standards ( General Schedule Qualification Standards (opm.gov) ) and the General Schedule Pay Scale (General Schedule (opm.gov))

4. Apply!

Begin the application and upload your resume and cover letter. Remember to tailor your application materials to the specific position you are applying to and to highlight any work experience that is directly relevant.
