Dr. Mubassira Khan is a Senior Scientist at the USDOT Highly Automated Systems Safety Center of Excellence (HASS COE) specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and advanced data analytics. She is a member of the OST-R Data Strategy Working Group, supporting development of a data strategy for OST-R to establish and invest in the culture of using data assets to the fullest. Dr. Khan is also a member of the USDOT Artificial Intelligence Working Group Steering Committee, enabling partnership with HASS COE in organizing AI workshops for broader USDOT community members. She is currently leading an effort to understand the safety challenges of vehicles equipped with automated driving systems (ADS) using publicly-available ADS disengagements data and applying ML models, and drafted a whitepaper to share with the transportation community. She is the HASS COE point of contact for the ADS Demo Grant projects and led multiple engagements with stakeholders in the form of technical exchange sessions. Dr. Khan joined HASS COE after five years with General Motors (GM), where she was the lead AI/ML scientist for multiple software products, including the Automated Driving Mapping software and Zero Emission Utility Service product. GM recognized Dr. Khan as one of the leading inventors in 2022 and presented her with multiple intellectual property awards between 2019 and 2022. Dr. Khan is a transportation engineer with a unique combination of experience in the application of AI/ML methods, travel behavior research, and knowledge of data analytics. She received a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. in Transportation Engineering from the University of Idaho, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
