Policy Statemen t on Emp loy ment and Adva ncement of
Persons w ith Disabilities
The U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) goal i s to enhance access to employ ment of people with disabi lities by ensuring equal employ ment opportunity. I encourage effecti ve outreach, recruitment, selection and ad vancement of quali tied people with di sa bilities. I am committed to making DOT a model employer of persons wi th di sabilities, especi a ll y those with severe di sabili ties referred to as "targeted d isabilities."
The Department will comply wi th Section 501 of the Rehabilita tion Act of 1 973, as amended, which prohibits Federa l agencies from d iscriminating against qualified indi viduals with
disabili ties. The Department will provide hiring, placement, and advancement opportunities for persons with disabilities. Vi olations of this law will result in appropriate di sciplinary actions against the offenders, up to and including di smissal.
The Department wi ll continue to identify and remove an y barriers to hiring, retai ning, and promoting persons with disa bilities. In accordance with Executi ve Order 13548 and the respecti ve DOT Plan to Increase Employmen t of People with Disabilities, a ll depa rtmental organizations will work wi th their offices of hu man resou rces in ou treach efforts to provide internship, employmen t, and advancement opportunities to persons wit h di sa bil ities, especially those with targeted disabilities.
The Department will prov i de a work en vironmen t tha t welcomes qualified indi viduals wit h disabilities and effecti vel y uses their skills, knowled ge, a nd abilities. Each of us has a rol e in identifying, reporting a nd eliminating ban·iers to the employment of people with disabilities. Guidance on how to handle requests for reasonable accommodation by em ployees and employ ment appli cants is con tained in DOT Order 1011 .1 , "Procedures for Processing Reasonable Accommodation Requests by Appl icants and Em ployees with Di sa bilities" (available on the Departmen t's Web site at https://www.ci vilrigh ts.clot.gov).
