Policy Statement
The U.S. Department of Transportation will take appropriate steps to ensure equal access in compl iance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. The Act prohi bits disability discrimination in any program or activity that receives Federal funds or i s conducted
by an executive agency. The Department will ensure that persons with disabilities have access to all its programs, services, acti vities, and informa tion that i s compa ra ble to the access provided to persons without di sabilities.
Similarl y, Section 508 of the Act requires tha t all electronic and inf01mation technology (EIT) purchased, developed, maintained, or used by the Depmtment must meet the accessibility standards of the legislation. The Department will comply with all statutory requirements to ensure that employees with di sabilities have access to and use of EIT to perform their assi gned functions. The accessibility and usabili ty of EIT will be compa ra ble for all employees, regardless of disability, unl ess an undue burden would be i mposed on the Department.
In order to achieve our organ izati onal excellence goal, the Department must maintai n an accessible work environment. Thjs is crucial to ensuring tha t all indi viduals with the appropria te skills and talents have equal employ ment opportunities. Supervi sors and managers should provide effecti ve leadershi p aimed at accom pli shing di sability assessment goals. The Chief Information Officer, the Assi sta nt Secreta ry for Administra ti on, a nd the Director of the Departmental Office of Civil Rights are available to provide employees with policy guidance and technical assistance.
