Rolf Schmitt
Bureau of Transportation Statistics
Rolf Schmitt is the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. He returned to the Bureau in 2012 after 12 years in the freight and operations offices of the Federal Highway Administration. He helped establish BTS in 1992, and served as its Associate Director for Transportation Studies until 2000.
His federal career started in 1977, and includes positions with the Department of Transportation’s National Transportation Policy Team, the Federal Highway Administration’s policy office, and the National Transportation Policy Study Commission. He serves on the Federal Committee on Statistical Methods and on several committees and task forces of the Transportation Research Board.
Dr. Schmitt holds a B.A. in geography from California State University, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in geography from the Johns Hopkins University.
