NHTSA Statement on Alliance for Automotive Innovation Commitment

The U.S. Department of Transportation applauds the commitment of individual automakers, as announced by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, to expand deployment of V2X. Safe and efficient transportation is fundamental to a well-functioning economy and society. The Department of Transportation’s mission is aimed at ensuring safe and efficient passage for travelers and goods throughout the Nation. Safety is our highest priority and the Department balances decisions appropriately against other competing public interests.

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology has enormous potential to prevent crashes and save lives on our roads. Today, we are able to make significant advancements in safety and mobility, improve transportation system operations using existing cooperative technologies, and reduce taxpayer burden. V2X technologies give us this opportunity. Later this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will announce improvements to its New Car Assessment Program and intends to include consideration of V2X as a recognized crash avoidance technology. It remains critical that we preserve the entire Safety Band for transportation innovation so we can save lives, protect vulnerable road users, and support the development of automated vehicle technologies.
