Secretary Buttigieg’s Engagements: Week of May 29, 2023 – June 2, 2023
This week Secretary Buttigieg continued to highlight the Department’s work to hold airlines accountable and improve air travel for all Americans following the Memorial Day travel weekend, where flight cancellations remained below 1%. Later in the week, the Secretary participated at a convening at U.S. DOT Headquarters with organizations that have joined the Department’s National Roadway Safety Strategy Call to Action, where he underscored the Department’s commitment to roadway safety and recent actions the Department has taken – like NHTSA’s new proposed rulemaking on automatic emergency braking – to make America’s roads safer for all users and reduce the number of traffic fatalities to the only acceptable level: zero. Additionally, Secretary Buttigieg participated in several meetings with transportation stakeholders and elected officials.
Secretary Buttigieg’s Engagements: Week of May 22, 2023 – May 26, 2023
Throughout the week, Secretary Buttigieg focused on the Department’s commitment to holding airlines accountable and ensuring that they provide good customer service to air travelers ahead of the busy Memorial Day travel weekend. During a press conference at U.S. DOT headquarters on Tuesday, the Secretary highlighted strengthened passenger protections the Department has secured and called on the airlines to do their part to minimize flight disruptions during the busy summer travel season. The Secretary offered remarks at the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) Federal Employee Conference focused on celebrating and advancing the next generation of AANHPI public service leaders. On Wednesday, Secretary Buttigieg traveled to the Port of Green Bay in Wisconsin, where he celebrated a $10.1 million grant from USDOT to help transform an old power plant into the port’s first new terminal in nearly a century. Thursday, the Secretary visited Cedar Rapids and Dubuque, Iowa, where he marked progress on a large-scale modernization project underway at the Eastern Iowa Airport, supported by a $20 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and toured downtown Dubuque to see how the city is using a $2 million grant from USDOT to remove an at-grade rail crossing, sitting down with the mayor and other community leaders to discuss their goals for the future. The Secretary also participated in several meetings with internal and external transportation stakeholders and elected officials.

In Detroit, the Secretary also joined Canada Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to announce the first U.S.-Canada Electric Vehicle Corridor and celebrate continued collaboration between the U.S. and Canada to lead the world in electric vehicle jobs, manufacturing, and supply chains. At APEC, he participated in bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the UK, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Chile, and Singapore. Ahead of a busy Memorial Day travel week, the Secretary focused on strengthening consumer protections and improving customer service for air travelers and joined President Biden in announcing an expanded airline customer service dashboard and new rulemaking on air travel compensation. Additionally, the Secretary led celebrations at the USDOT headquarters as the building was renamed the “William T. Coleman, Jr. And Norman Y. Mineta Federal Building” in honor of the two transformational former Secretaries of Transportation. The families of Secretary Mineta and Secretary Coleman, General Services Administration Administrator Robin Carnahan, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, and former U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio joined the Secretary for the occasion. Later in the week, the Secretary participated in an event with the Alliance for Entrepreneurial Equity focused on ensuring that the investments made from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are distributed effectively and fairly so that that small and minority-owned businesses benefit fairly from this historic investment in our nation’s infrastructure.
Secretary Buttigieg’s Engagements: Week of May 1, 2023 – May 5, 2023
This week, the Secretary focused on how the House GOP budget proposal would hurt America’s transportation systems – limiting rail safety inspections and hurting air traffic control operations – and emphasized ongoing work at USDOT to make our supply chains stronger and more efficient. To start the week, the Secretary participated in meetings with external stakeholders and White House officials. He convened public sector leaders and company CEOs as part of a U.S. Department of Transportation Freight Logistics Optimization Works (FLOW) initiative, a first-of-its-kind effort by the Biden-Harris Administration and supply chain companies to enhance data sharing for smoother goods movement. Later in the week, Secretary Buttigieg provided remarks at the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) Conference where he thanked America’s air traffic controllers for their work to ensure that America has the safest as well as most complex air traffic control system in the world. He closed the week by providing keynote remarks at the American Economic Liberties Project's Anti-Monopoly Summit focused on the work President Biden is doing to address concentration across the economy and the Department’s work to address consolidation in the transportation sector specifically. Throughout the week, the Secretary conducted a number of internal meetings and participated in events and meetings with domestic and international transportation stakeholders.
