U.S. Transportation Secretary Signs Memorandum of Cooperation with India’s Minister of Road Transport

DELHI, India – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx was in Delhi, India today to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Transportation with India’s Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and of Shipping, Nitin Gadkari. Minister Gadkari signed the MOC on behalf of the Indian Government, which will establish a Transportation Partnership among the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Indian Ministries of Railways; Road Transport and Highways; Shipping; and Urban Development.

“President Obama and Prime Minister Modi recently announced agreements for the United States and India to work together on important issues facing both our countries,” said Secretary Foxx.  “I’m proud to be here today to further strengthen our countries’ cooperation on vital transportation issues that will help save lives and improve the quality of life for the people of India.”

The Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been working with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on road safety programs, including drunk driving countermeasures and motorcycle safety.  The MOC will deepen the cooperation of our two countries to include new important activities relating to the development of Smart Cities and sustainability.

Cooperation on the transportation elements of Smart Cities will be coordinated through an inter-ministerial working group and include areas such as intelligent transportation systems, multi-modal planning, livability, safety, and infrastructure financing.  In addition, both countries agree to cooperate on vehicle fuel efficiency standards and promotion of dedicated freight corridors to facilitate the movement of goods from India’s ports to major cities of the region.  

While in India, Secretary Foxx will also meet with U.S. and Indian transportation companies to promote the development of advanced technologies and help resolve market access issues that will facilitate trade between the two countries. 

Agreement helps save lives by expanding the coordination of vital safety information between countries.
