WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy today announced the creation of a first-of-its-kind Beautifying Transportation Infrastructure Council (BTIC). The Council will advise the Secretary on policy and design opportunities to build beautiful structures and restore the beauty of key transportation infrastructure, including highways, bridges, and transit hubs. Ensuring safety and efficiency remain the top priority.

The Department of Transportation encourages nominations of the nation’s brightest architects, landscape designers, urban planners, artists, transportation engineers, and historic preservation advocates for membership to BTIC.

“What happened to our country’s proud tradition of building great, big, beautiful things? It’s time the design for America’s latest infrastructure projects reflects our nation’s strength, pride, and promise,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “We’re engaging the best and brightest minds in architectural design and engineering to make beautiful structures that move you and bring about a new Golden Age of Transportation.”

The Council will identify best practices, develop aesthetic performance metrics, and provide guidance on projects that enhance public spaces and reflect local character. The Council will comprise of up to 11 members, who will serve two-year terms and may be reappointed. The Council is expected to meet biannually. Nominations must be received by November 21, 2025.

The creation of this Council aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order (E.O.) 14344, Making Federal Architecture Beautiful Again, which aims to update the policies guiding federal architecture design.  

The Department of Transportation established the Beautifying Transportation Infrastructure Council on September 30, 2025, and published the solicitation for membership in the Federal Register here.   

The purpose of the Council will be to advise the Secretary of Transportation on enhancing the aesthetic value of the Nation’s transportation systems. This discretionary committee will be established in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) of 1972, as amended (5 U.S.C. ch. 10). The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy (OST-P) will operationalize and manage the Council.
