President Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy Put Nation’s Capital in High Gear with Freedom 250 Grand Prix

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy alongside President Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office today announced the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. Thanks to President Trump, Washington, D.C. will host the first-ever IndyCar street race around the capital from August 21-23. The historic event will highlight American ingenuity in engineering, technology, and high-performance racing.

IndyCar showcases innately American qualities including our ability to push ourselves beyond our known limits and our relentlessness to never back down from a challenge,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “There’s no better way to celebrate our 250th anniversary than bringing that energy to the nation’s capital and bringing Washington, D.C. to the world stage. Thanks to President Trump, this exciting dream for millions of Americans is now a reality.”
As a part of the nationwide Freedom 250 celebrations and President Trump’s Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix will celebrate American independence, showcase the iconic beauty and grandeur of Washington, D.C. and the National Mall, and deliver unprecedented tourism revenue for the nation’s capital.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will be free to the general public and will be televised to a live network via FOX. The race will be administered by INDYCAR, the Freedom 250 taskforce, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Interior, and the City of Washington, D.C. For more than a century, INDYCAR has hosted the iconic Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on the Sunday before Memorial Day, annually the world’s largest single-day spectator sporting event. “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” serves as a singular and powerful tribute to the United States Armed Forces, with a crowd of more than 350,000 people gathering to show respect and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of our military heroes.
