DOT to Call for Innovative Research Proposals from Small Businesses. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) seeks innovative proposals from small businesses interested in conducting research needed by the Department’s agencies. On July 25, DOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration/John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center released the second Fiscal Year 2013 solicitation for the DOT Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The solicitation contains a total of six research topic descriptions from the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration. Research topics include improved welding techniques to use with high-performance bridge steel; simulators to train drivers and teenagers not yet driving to detect and respond to traffic hazards; and improved methods to identify fraudulent or suspect applications for U.S. DOT registration from start-up truck and bus companies. The solicitation invites small businesses to submit research proposals on these topics no later than Sept. 23, 2013. The solicitation is available online at http://www.volpe.dot.gov/sbir.
