DOT Earns Gold Star Award During “SBA National Small Business Week.”
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) was recognized this week for its effectiveness in providing contracting and subcontracting opportunities for small, disadvantaged and women-owned businesses. The Small Business Administration (SBA), as part of this year’s Small Business Week, presented DOT with one of SBA’s two Gold Star Awards for achievements during fiscal year 2009. SBA cited the Department for surpassing its goals for providing contracts to small and disadvantaged firms, women-owned small businesses and firms located in areas underutilized by businesses. The Gold Star Awards were established to recognize federal agencies that establish aggressive goals and strategic initiatives to ensure that small business plays a role in the federal marketplace. At DOT, the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) oversees the agency’s small business program, supported by DOT headquarters, the Department’s modal agencies and OSDBU’s network of Small Business Transportation Resource Centers.
BTS Releases Report on Tsunami’s Impact on U.S. Trade and Transportation with Japan.
The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released Preliminary Observations of the Tsunami’s Impact on U.S. Trade and Transportation with Japan. The fact sheet examines the immediate impacts of the tsunami and possible longer-term disruptions. According to the report, the United States faces potential ramifications from the damage to Japan’s freight transportation system caused by the March earthquake and tsunami. The United States may face lower levels of both air and maritime imports in automobiles and parts, as well as fewer imports of high-end electronics and devices such as semiconductors and specialty chemicals. The disruption of Japan’s transportation and distribution networks has already affected U.S. industrial supply chains, particularly automobile manufacturing and assembly plants.
