DRIVING THE NEWS: Trump’s Transportation Department Hosts First-Ever Multi-Modal Road Safety Expo
Event showcases life-saving technologies and innovations that will make America’s roads safer
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) today held its first-ever multi-modal Road Safety Innovation Exposition (Safety Expo) to showcase cutting-edge technology that works to make American roads safer. This capitalizes on USDOT's recent announcement that traffic fatalities fell to the second-lowest rate on record.
“This Department is focused on unleashing transportation innovation and developing new technologies that build on our progress in keeping American roads safe,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “We’re proud to have hosted hundreds of people at our first-ever Safety Expo who got to interact with cutting-edge technologies that have the potential to save American lives.”
“This Safety Expo is a launchpad for the solutions needed to drive down the number of accidental deaths on our roads. We’re engaging with bold innovators and new technologies to save lives and make sure families are returning home to their loved ones at the end of each day,” said Federal Highway Administrator Sean McMaster.
Attendees had the opportunity to interact with more than 40 innovations in roadway safety, infrastructure, and vehicle technology, including:
- Vehicle Crashworthiness Improvements - Two crash-tested vehicles—from 1996 and 2026—on display to showcase 30 years of crashworthiness improvements.
- Retroreflective Pavement Markings - A live demonstration showcasing how advanced wet reflective markings can help drivers see the road clearly, even in inclement weather.
- Lifesaving Post-Crash Care - Local Emergency Management Service personnel showcasing lifesaving post-crash interventions, including prehospital blood transfusions, CPR, and “Stop the Bleed” techniques.
- Cutting-edge Commercial Motor Vehicle Innovation - An exhibit showcasing a freight intelligence platform that uses a nationwide network of roadside sensors to verify a carrier's physical footprint, helping law enforcement weed out fraudulent chameleon carriers, combat cargo theft, and counter human trafficking.
- Virtual Reality for Training - Multiple exhibits showcasing how virtual reality technology can be used for simulated behind-the-wheel training for drivers.
- Advanced Railroad Crossing Warning Technology - An exhibit showcasing the latest-and-greatest cross warning technology via a walk-through demo crossing.
- Work Zone Safety Technology - An immersive Intelligent Work Zone demonstration, where attendees experience how connected infrastructure, AI, automation, and advanced vehicle technologies work together to protect roadway workers and the traveling public.
- Transit Safety Through Automation - A live, interactive teleoperation platform demonstration of DOT-funded Region 4 University Transportation Center’s Remote-Controlled Operation system for Level-4 automated driving shuttles.
