2018 Small Business Week - Hamma Down Enterprises

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), Office of Small and Disadvantage Business Utilization (OSDBU) is proud to highlight Hamma Down Enterprises.

Owner: Shawn Hawkins (second from left)

Hamma Down Enterprises, Inc (HDE) started as a hobby for its owner, Shawn Hawkins, while he was serving on active duty in the United States Army. Shawn developed his passion for truck driving and operating heavy equipment while riding with and listening to the tales of his family who were heavily involved in the construction industry as foremen, truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, and tradesmen. He experienced much of the growth and development in the Washington Metropolitan, first hand, from the seats of their vehicles and equipment. While in the military, Shawn did small demolition and lot clean-up jobs with his pick-up truck, dump trailer, and a small farm tractor. He did pretty well with this set up and continued operating the business as a hobby for several years from duty station to duty station. In 2009, while at his last duty station, Shawn incorporated HDE. Upon retirement in 2014, he transitioned the business from a part-time hobby into a full-time operation with a small fleet of trucks and construction equipment.

SBTRC Connection

Annual revenue for Hamma Down Enterprises has consistently grown since the business started 4 years ago, with a significant growth increase after graduating from Bonding Education Program (BEP) in Fairfax VA, August 2017.

With technical assistance provided by the SBTRC, Hamma Down Enterprises was able to meet the federal contracting requirements to successfully compete. Since obtaining surety coverage, HDE also has been able to obtain multi-year contracts with the City of Culpepper, VA for clean-up and debris removal, and with the City of Manassas VA, for snow removal.

“The Bonding Education Program really opened up the capacity of my company. It also gave me more confidence in bidding projects, as well as, partnering with the other graduates for contracts.”
