The LaGuardia Community College serves as the Northeast Region Small Business Transportation Resource Center (NE SBTRC) regional office of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization. The NE SBTRC administers U.S. DOT’s small business assistance programs throughout the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
Our mission is to increase the number of small businesses that are prepared to compete for, and enter into transportation-related contracts at the federal, state, and local levels. The NE SBTRC works closely with state and local transportation and technical assistance agencies in the region to assist small disadvantaged firms. Headquartered in New York City, the NE SBTRC provides small disadvantaged businesses technical assistance in the areas of procurement, short-term financing, bonding, and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise certification. Workshops, as well as counseling, are held in both English and Spanish.
The NE SBTRC’s primary focus has been to provide real-time support and resources to small disadvantaged clients in critical areas such as creating corporate capabilities statements and matching those capabilities to bid opportunities; assisting clients in locating prime contractors, providing full reviews of client certification and STLP applications prior to submission, developing workshops to meet specific client needs, advocating for clients with certifying agencies, and working with local transportation agencies on behalf of our clients.
The NE SBTRC also administers the U.S. DOT’s Women In Transportation Initiative (WITI). This initiative, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students encourages high school girls and college women to seek careers in the transportation industry. This initiative in collaboration with state DOTs, regional colleges and universities, and local area high schools is carried out through special events hosted by the NE SBTRC and through exhibition at college career fairs.
