On Feb. 1, 2023, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $800 million in grant awards for 511 communities through the first round of funding for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program.

The fiscal year 2022 awards include 37 Implementation Grants, which are summarized in 1-page fact sheets in this document. The Implementation Grant awards will provide safety benefits to all people irrespective of how they use the roads, especially those outside of a vehicle:

  • Over 90 percent of awards will improve the safety of people walking.
  • Over 80 percent of awards will improve the safety of people biking.
  • Almost two-thirds of awards will provide safety benefits to public transit users and/or persons with disabilities.

Implementation Grants provide funding for communities to implement strategies and projects that will significantly reduce or eliminate transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries.
