Help Us Spread the Safe Digging Message on August 11
There are 2.6 million miles of pipeline crisscrossing our nation, running under our streets and neighborhoods. And underground there are utility lines that deliver most of the energy used to heat, cool, and operate the nation’s homes, cars, and businesses.
That’s why it is so important that everyone from backyard DIY’ers to utility workers to independent contractors always call 8-1-1 before they dig to avoid major disruptions and injuries, and even loss of life.
Sunday, August 11, or 8-1-1, is the perfect day to share this safety message. After calling 8-1-1, a team will come out and mark the pipelines and utility lines, enabling safe digging. As PHMSA Administrator Cynthia Quarterman says, “It’s free, easy, and helps keep you, your neighbors, and your property safe.”
Safe digging is a shared responsibility, and I encourage everyone to visit DOT’s Safe Digging YouTube playlist, which highlights 8-1-1 outreach efforts all over the nation.
Almost every single pipeline accident caused by excavation could have been prevented with just one call to 8-1-1. On August 11, help us make 8-1-1 as well-known as 9-1-1. Post the 811 logo on Facebook. Tweet #Call811B4Udig.
Thanks for your help! On Sunday, let’s get the word out: know what’s below BEFORE you dig. Call 8-1-1.
