US DOT Mobile Apps: Helping you stay safe

Posted by Department of Transportation Public Affairs

Leading up to this year’s Super Bowl, we posted several messages about SaferRide, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mobile app that helps individuals find a safe ride home if they’ve had too much to drink or otherwise believe they need help getting home.

SaferRide isn’t the only mobile app created by US DOT agencies that keeps travelers across the country safe. There are apps to help you find safe bus companies, fly your drones safely and legally, and keep your car and its passengers safe.

Below is a list of mobile apps available from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration and NHTSA.

FMCSA’s mobile app, SaferBus, is part of the agency’s Look Before you Book program.  It provides easy access to bus company safety information. When booking bus travel, there is more to consider than just price and convenience. Whether you are booking travel for a group or purchasing an individual ticket, FMCSA makes it easy to check a bus company's safety record on-the-go.

Annually, the motorcoach industry provides nearly 700 million passenger trips – compared to roughly 720 million passenger trips provided by airlines.  No one boarding an airline would question that the airline is compliant with federal safety regulations – but individuals and groups that charter buses need to do their homework ahead of time and check the safety record of any company they are considering contracting.

  • Check if a bus company is allowed to operate - enables consumers to identify whether an interstate bus company has been placed out-of-service and operating illegally
  • Review bus safety performance - provides up to 24 months of safety performance data.
  • File a complaint - allows consumers, drivers, and members of industry to file a complaint about safety, service, or discrimination issues through the National Consumer Complaint Database.

FAA’s mobile app, B4UFLY, provides drone and model aircraft users with situational awareness and considers the user’s current or planned location in relation to operational restrictions. Indicators inform the user if model aircraft or drone operation is prohibited, requires the user to take certain actions, or if there are no FAA operating restrictions other than flying safely.

  • Heads up status view for quick “at-a-glance” review of current status
  • Map interface to plot nearby flight restrictions
  • Planner Mode to help the user plan for different flight locations and times.
  • More info provides helpful links for using the B4UFLY app and additional FAA resources

NHTSA’s mobile app, SaferRide, is the simplest possible way to get home safe and only has three self-explanatory buttons on the home screen.

  • Choose from a list of available taxi services in your area, and with the tap of a button call them.
  • Call a pre-programmed contact.
  • If you just need to know where you are, you can bring up a map of your current location.

NHTSA’s other mobile app, SaferCar, provides important information andn fndtions that will help you make informed safety decisions involving your vehicle.

  • 5-Star Safety Rating – look up and compare safety rating for various vehicles
  • Recalls and complaints – get notified if a safety issue with your vehicle becomes known, or submit a complaint if you suspect a safety issue
  • Help installing care seats – get driving directions to locations that will help you install car seats
  • Safety headlines and alerts – NHTSA news and information and recall notices for your vehicle
