A Holiday Message from Secretary Chao
As we prepare for the holidays, I want to thank you again for welcoming a new team and for your work to advance the Department’s mission for our country. Together, we accomplished a great deal!
When an explosive fire brought down the busy commuter bridge on I-85 in Atlanta, the Department worked in partnership with state and local officials to restore and re-open the bridge under budget and ahead of schedule. When hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria in rapid succession caused destruction and disruption in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Department aided relief and rescue efforts and helped to get airports, roads, and ports operating again. MARAD ships provided food, water, power and berthing for first responders. And many of our colleagues volunteered to help in the recovery effort.
The Department is making great progress in streamlining permitting processes to help expedite repairs and improvements of our nation’s crumbling infrastructure.
As we look to 2018, by continuing to emphasize safety, strengthen America’s infrastructure and foster innovation, we can make a difference for future generations.
In closing, I hope we will remember others in need. This DOT spirit of helping others is reflected in this year’s Combined Federal Campaign, “Show Some Love”. Hope you can spare a few minutes to browse the CFC online catalog at cfcgiving.opm.gov, and find wonderful organizations that can do a lot of good with your support. Thanks for your time!
Best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday!
Elaine L. Chao
