Greg Winfree sworn in as Administrator of RITA

Congratulations are in order this week to Greg Winfree, who was sworn in on Monday as the new Administrator of our Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA).

Though prior to Monday, the sign on his door read "Deputy Administrator," Administrator Winfree was very much prepared on his first day. After all, he had already been at RITA's helm in an "Acting" capacity since October 2011.

President Obama nominated him for Administrator in July of this year, and he was confirmed by the Senate earlier this month.

Under Winfree's tenure, RITA has conducted a year-long connected vehicle safety pilot in Ann Arbor, MI; held two University Transportation Center competitions, awarding grants to 55 UTCs; published a departmental RD&T Strategic Plan; signed an agreement with the Republic of Korea on Intelligent Transportation cooperation; and has been very active on spectrum issues in its role as civilian lead agency on GPS matters.

In 2012, Administrator Winfree led the US Delegation to the ITS World Congress in Vienna, and he has served as co-chair of the interagency Space Based Positioning, Navigation & Timing Executive Committee Executive Steering Group.

As both an innovator --with design and utility patents to his credit-- and an experienced Intellectual Property litigator, Mr. Winfree has a special affinity for RITA’s diverse transportation research, innovation and knowledge management mission.

Much of his career has also been aligned with organizations with a strong focus in the STEM (Science, Education, Technology and Mathematics) disciplines, and in his official capacity at RITA, Mr. Winfree has spoken extensively on the importance of STEM education to the future DOT and transportation workforce.

Because of those credentials and his two years of steady leadership, everyone at RITA is happy to have him officially sworn in.

And everyone at DOT joins them in wishing Administrator Winfree our heartfelt congratulations!
