DOT by the Numbers

Per Consumer Price Index (CPI), transportation costs in August 2024 rose 0.1% from July 2024. However, costs fell 1.0% from August 2023. For first month since July 2023, transportation dampened the 2.5% year-over-year increase in prices (known as inflation) by 8.1%. Per the Producer Price Index (PPI), prices for transportation of freight equipment rose 1.7% from August 2023-August 2024. Air: 1.1% Increase; Rail: 3.4% Increase; Truck: 1.8% Increase; Water: 2.9% decrease; Arrangement of Freight & Cargo: 35.3%
